BOOMERIFICS

Howdy ‘n Betty

Kudos to Gail; another of America’s workplace superstars!

I bought a pair of walking/working shoes today from a local store here in Fort Oglethorpe. I probably have the best fit that I have had in several years. The lady who helped me in my search, (a very difficult customer am I) Gail, was also a baby boomer and having a struggle physically with the role she has been forced into.

I must have tried on about ten pair of shoes [some I didn't really want to ;  )] before I found the perfect pair! She kept suggesting this and that and we finally found the right fit for me!

There are truly some physically-demanding jobs that those over 50 should not be doing; even if they feel like they are handling it okay. I know I shouldn’t say that, but it is true. I can understand some employers’ being reluctant to hire older workers in some cases for reasons of safety. However, we must work to eat and eat to live until we reach the point where we cannot work anymore.

For many of us, our minds are still sharp and there are more and more of these kinds of jobs out there that we can do. If you aren’t computer-literate, please get that way as soon as you can!

Gail took the time to help me that most kids right out of high school would not have done. Her aim was to please the customer as she was paid to do. She didn’t have to answer her cell phone as we spoke. She just made me feel important as her customer.

Kudos to Gail and to all the other baby boomers out there who are doing their best to fulfill their roles in America’s (many times ungrateful) workplace. Have a good day, Gail! ~Howdy
