THE GIRL ON THE CORNER

One of the greatest things God gave us was our memories. It can also be one of the worst at times, as you well know. I choose to remember the good because remembering the more happy moments I had in life bring me more joy now when I feel I need it most!

Her name was Kathy… she lived just down the street from me on the corner by the train tracks in East Chattanooga. We were both in Elementary school, which was just across the street from where she lived. {The train that ran those tracks would always throw out bubble gum and candy to all the children. I can still see us all scrambling to pick it up. I don’t know who the men were, but I thank them for the few moments of happiness they brought to our lives or a regular basis}.

One day, as we sat on her front porch blowing soap bubbles, Kathy accidentally broke my  soap bubble wand. (I don’t remember exactly how that came about). She jumped up, went in the house and got a spool of thread. She returned with it and gave me her soap bubble wand. I said no, but she insisted I take it. She used the thread spool the rest of the day to blow her bubbles.

That moment of kindness stuck with me. I used to play the song ALL FOR THE LOVE OF A GIRL on the record player and Kathy was gentle on my mind.

We were good friends throughout our school years. This is one of the memories I cherish. This is the way so many people were back then. Life was pretty simple and times were good. We were pretty poor, yet very rich.  Love is such a wonderful thing! ~Howdy
